Dear friends in Christ: I haven't contributed to this discussion for 3 or 4 weeks because the last time I did I was the only writer. It is my hope that we can re-institute an actual discussion but it takes more than one. In the spirit of getting things started again, I will now jump in.

The steps described in the first two verses are as follows:
 1) The message is given.
 2) The message is received (by those who are receptive).
 3) Those receiving the message are encouraged to take a stand (bear witness to the gospel through both faith and action).
 4) Those who have come to Christ need to become confirmed in their faith so that they will be steadfast. The great assurance of salvation must be held fast to in the face of tests.

At the top of this list is the work of the teacher, the evangelist. As we move down the list there is a greater and greater role to be played by both the congregation and the individual believer. This work of consolidation and protection of one's faith is the DUTY of the individual (see 1 Cor. 3:16,17 and 4:1,2) and the LOVING SERVICE of the community (see 1Cor. 14:31).
