As the AmeriCorps Ambassador of Mentoring at Cambridge Family and Children’s Service (CFCS), I’m writing today to see if the people of the Union Baptist Church could help fill a community need: mentors for youth.
The CFCS Mentoring Program serves young people between the ages of 8-22. Many are referred from CFCS’s other departments such as Intensive Foster Care or our residential programs while some are referred to us through the community by a teacher or guidance counselor. The youth we serve come from various ethnic backgrounds; many are immigrants or first generation American citizens. Some have also been part of the foster care system. They are kids whose lives have unfortunately contained a significantly higher amount of instability than that of their peers. Our Mentor Program is unique in that it provides these youth with the one-on-one companionship of an adult to supplement the work of parents, teachers, counselors, social workers, and education professionals in order to give these youth both the social and recreational development, and the emotional support they need.
For many young people, having a positive role model may mean the difference between pursuing their full potential and merely wishing they had done so. The most pressing need at CFCS is male mentors because we only make same gender mentor-mentee matches. We’ve had some boys on our waiting list for over a year because we have not had an appropriate mentor to match with them. I’m wondering if members of your Men’s Bible Study group, or anyone in your congregation, would be interested in this program. Our other AmeriCorps volunteer, Yelena Tsilker, will be in your area tomorrow afternoon and could meet with you to answer any questions and possibly provide you with flyers and brochures to distribute.
I appreciate your time and look forward to speaking with you soon.
Sincerely,
Synda Mahan
